Update on NASA's RESOLVE Project and CoreDX DDS

May 02, 2012, NASA’s Regolith and Environment Science and Oxygen and Lunar Volatile Extraction (RESOLVE) project held their first practice test session, or “Data Dry Run” in April 2012. Twin Oaks Computing provides the middleware NASA needs to facilitate communications within RESOLVE: CoreDX DDS.  This small footprint communications middleware provides low overhead, flexibility, and support for time and content based filtering.

For this project NASA needs a flexible, easy to port communications middleware, giving them a way to “talk” with the system.  CoreDX DDS technology provides the solution: expediting communication between multiple nodes involved in processes such as command and control, distributed data processing, telemetry, status, and much more.  All of this is accomplished through a distributed ground control interface at Johnson Space Center, Kennedy Space Center, and in Canada. CoreDX DDS supports inter-process communication, including command and telemetry.

One primary objective of the Data Dry Run was to demonstrate the ability to operate the RESOLVE payload software across the Analog Communications Team VPN. This Virtual Private Network connects all of the sites involved with the RESOLVE project.

During the demonstration, the Kennedy Space Center RESOLVE software lab emulated a partial RESOLVE payload as it would be operated once deployed. In demonstrations the display reacted as if the sites were actually controlling the payload in the field.

The Kennedy Space Center locations supporting the Data Dry Run were Firing Room 1, the Analog team office and the RESOLVE software lab. Johnson Space Center, Ames Research Center, and ExDOC (the Canadian Space Agency control room), were the remote sites which also successfully connected with the RESOLVE software set. The Data Dry Run was a success:

“The Data Dry Run was successful with CoreDX DDS working well across multiple platforms and geographic locations” – Thomas Moss, NASA

Currently the RESOLVE team is continuing development of the payload, preparing for a possible lunar voyage in early 2015.  Twin Oaks Computing, Inc. is looking forward to continuing their collaboration with NASA, advancing space exploration and communications technologies to the moon and beyond.
