CoreDX DDS Tips & Tricks

Welcome to this month's edition of CoreDX DDS Tips & Tricks, where our engineers provide quick bits of information to help our customers.

The Lifespan QoS policy

The Lifespan QoS policy is applied to DataWriters and allows the application to configure an expiration period for written data samples. Lifespan is infinite by default, that is, written samples do not expire. A non-infinite lifespan configuration allows the DDS infrastructure to remove samples from the DataWriter cache, along with any matched DataReader caches once they 'expire' - at the end of their lifespan.

Lifespan may be used in place of, or along with the Resource Limits and History QoS policies to help manage DataWriter and DataReader cache sizes. In particular, when a DURABILITY kind of TRANSIENT_LOCAL or higher is configured, Lifespan may be useful as a mechanism to remove older data samples from the DataWriter and matched DataReader caches.

Fore more information on the Lifespan QoS policy and its effect on DataWriter and DataReader caches, check out the published CoreDX DDS Sample and Instance whitepaper.

CoreDX DDS Tips & Tricks are intended to be useful for engineers using CoreDX DDS. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Webinar Available on Demand - RTPS: The Interoperable Wire Protocol for DDS Systems

The Real-Time Publish-Subscribe(RTPS) is the network communication protocol that enables real-time data exchange between distributed systems. In this webinar, we provide an overview of RTPS and explore how it serves as the underlying wire protocol for DDS, enabling seamless and reliable data exchange in real-time, distributed systems. We will discuss:

  • The motivation behind RTPS
  • The basics of RTPS messages and sub-messages
  • RTPS discovery
  • How DDS Security affects RTPS

Whether you're building autonomous vehicles, robotics, or mission-critical industrial applications, understanding RTPS is key to leveraging the full power of DDS. Join us to dive deeper into how RTPS ensures low-latency, scalable communication across your distributed systems.
